Ruby’s Knishes

When I was a kid, I spent summers in the Borscht Belt of NY (otherwise known to regular humans as the Catksills) filled with Bungalow Colonies, old timey hotels and resorts and lots of different vendors bringing goods and food from the NYC area to Sullivan County. During a recent walk-through for a new move in/move out client, who happens to be an artist and photographer, this photo caught my eye. While it isn’t Ruby’s Knishes, it is a Knish cart, originating in either Brooklyn or the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where all legitimate Knishes get their start (unless technically, we say Knishes got their start in Russia/Poland and the surrounding areas). We are having fun packing these clients. They have a lot of cool art that needs to be carefully wrapped, packed to move, and once they get moved, we will help them settle in.

Who doesn’t love Charlie Brown? But more importantly, I think Lucy would be very helpful to those of us dealing with deep emotional attachment to stuff. I think she would advise people to Call Sheilah! She would tell them that they need assistance as they tackle their senior move management project; their downsizing project; their general clean out and all the tasks related to lightening the load. She might even say, “Call Sheilah! I know she will give you permission to lighten the load.”

We were working with a retired NYC fire fighter, helping to downsize, sort, pack and relocate to a local apartment in a new residence. My father was a NYC firefighter, too. I was not surprised to learn that my client’s kids had the same toys we did, firefighter stuff: helmets, hoses, trucks, sirens, ladders and our own special fireman lamp whose name was Alert, because the base of the lamp said “Ever Alert.” Google it. It’s quite popular on ebay.

We stumbled on these Life Magazines from 1943. There were about ten of them. All of them celebrated women, Black veterans, patriotism and the accomplishments of people for whom the odds were against. These types of signs show up in almost every home we work in. While surrounded by this accumulation, we also see hand written signs that say “put things away.” We see books on the various methods of downsizing that have been popularized by all kinds of media. We see magazines and video tapes (yes, video tapes!) on decluttering, downsizing, letting go of stuff, hoarding and more. In particular, these things accumulate in the homes where there is clearly something happening that created circumstances and things have gotten away from the home owner. Often the amount of stuff that people are accumulating, storing and holding onto has become completely unmanageable. Of course this is triggered by a traumatic event, and while we are not therapists, we have learned in the last ten years or so, that the accumulation of too much, while yearning for simplification, creates spiritual, physical and mental health challenges. We do our small part and are honored to help.
