This little exhibit was featured outside of an apartment at one of the Senior Living Communities. We were assisting a client with her packing and moving, at the end of March from her home in Schenectady to Colonie. We were there between St. Patrick’s Day, Passover, and Easter and wondered about this person’s collection!

Holiday decor?
Have you ever had the pleasure of assembling these shelves?
Team Call Sheilah has and almost every time, we end up near tears.
Yes, they are cool looking, practical, useful but wow, do they require patience.
We spent the last two weeks working with someone who has way too much stuff...I hesitate to say a hoarder, but we assisted as best we could.
We relocated around 30% of the contents of her private home, to her new independent living space.
We unpacked the essentials, and then we set up industrial plastic shelving units in the garage, for all the things she may not really need, and definitely doesnt have space for. We made it so she can "shop" or "browse" in her own garage.
We set up the metal shelves inside.
If she does write us a review, it could possibly say, like several others "I should have listened to Sheilah more."
One of the sweetest women but struggling to let go of meaningful (and maybe not so meaningful) belongings.

Should this get shipped to Europe? 🤔
Recently, after the death of a loved one, we were called to do our Compassionate Cleanout Service. The adult children were inquiring about shipping this beautiful but very worn and not very comfortable couch to the UK. I gave them my honest opinion, which was, if your personal attachment to this piece is worth shipping to the tune of $4000, then I would suggest taking and framing a picture of it, and enjoying it that way. Ultimately, they listened to me! But, we would have happily facilitated the shipment if that was the decision they made.

Self help by the books. In addition to finding multiple books on decluttering, downsizing, getting organized, managing your hoarding disorder and other challenges, we always see these types of self help books in our clients homes. So many challenges — addiction, obsessiveness, compulsiveness, impulse control issues, rage, ADHD and joylessness. I’m sure there are more, but this is a pretty typical sampling of what is the most common amongst Call Sheilah! clients.

This is what you find when you are downsizing, sorting, organizing and packing with Scots. Everything is plaid. There were curtains, towels (YES, TOWELS), linens, blankets and this delightful coin bank.

A very accomplished scout lived in our area. When we were downsizing his daughter, we stumbled upon all of these – and like most of the personal things we have the privilege of sorting and handling – these seemed pretty special. We wrapped them professionally, a part of our packing and unpacking service, and then helped display them in the den. We continued to unpack the more mundane, typical items. We love stumbling across all the uniqueness that makes people interesting.

Look at these two. Their relationship spans decades, starting in 1976. I can only imagine if this couple called us to help with their moving journey. We would downsize and pack and help with all aspects of their estate clearing. I bet they have some really vintage and interesting artifacts from Sesame Street and the Muppet Gang. Long live Kermit and Miss Piggy. My favorite heteronormative couple.

“I’d like to buy the world a Coke…”
This client had some really cool collectibles, like this one…a functional “Coke Machine” coin bank. It had lights and noises and the client told us numerous stories about their own childhood collectibles. We helped clear the estate. Part of that was organizing an estate sale, so that we could get the house empty and assist with staging and listing.

“I yam what I yam!” We love cool vintage finds like this Olive Oyl (Popeye’s girlfriend) pop-up toy. It’s old. It’s in good condition. It survived the packing and the unpacking, along with everything else, and it’s adorable.
